Summer Energy

It's September, and the garden is winding down, mostly. The pumpkins are coloring nicely, and while they will be too late in coming for most folks, they will be right on time for Halloween.

I was feeling kinda down about the garden this year. Many things didn't go as I'd planned, and harvests were smaller than I'd hoped. But then yesterday, I decided to just walk around and really look at the spaces around me. Which are not slowing down. In fact, everything is literally thrumming with life. The buzz of the bees on the goldenroad was so load that it sounded mechanical. I saw a Great Spangled Fritillary, which I'd never seen before. There were two full grown Praying Mantises in the front bed, and another enormous yellow garden spider. And at twilight as I drove back from town, the sky was filled with bats - easily over a hundred of them.

The calendar says it's September, but summer is full sway around here.
